Horton’s Coffee House.

Horton’s Coffee is raising the bar in Newport with high-end, artisanal coffee, seeing ex-Tata Steel employee Gavin Horton thrive.
Working as a quality control inspector for Tata Steel, before taking redundancy in 2016, Gavin Horton looked to use his skills for being a perfectionist in another way of life.
Identifying a gap in the market within his home city of Newport, he wanted to bring to the people a high-quality coffee and food outlet that he believe they deserved. Cycling along the city’s waterfront one day, he spotted the perfect strategic location for his business. But to do that, he needed investment.
Wanting the best equipment to serve his discerning clients, he knew finance was needed. Reaching out to UKSE after researching the support available, it wasn’t long before the project was off the ground and Horton’s Coffee was well established.
"I wanted Hortons Coffee to stand out from the crowd and I knew that being the best does not come cheap. I am really grateful for the funding UKSE were able to provide, without which we would not have been able to achieve the high standards that we have."Gavin Horton, Owner
How we did it.
To begin, Gavin invested £200,000 into the project, £25,000 of which was a loan from us, who were delighted to support a former Tata Steel employee.
His sense for an opportunity paid off. Horton’s Coffee House is a hit with the people of Newport and its visitors. Overlooking the River Usk, Horton’s is strategically built on a cycle path and riverside walkway with a large footfall.
An eye for detail and desire for perfection means his offer is of the highest quality. His funding from us allowed him to consider the best when equipping his outlet, buying a top of the range Italian La Marzocco espresso machine, of which there are few in the UK. For an artisanal coffee outlet, it was the perfect USP.
Our investment may have helped to establish the business, but above all it is Gavin's technical skill and perfectionism that has made Horton’s a success, fulfilling his ambitions.
