Project overview.

  • Case study type: Community
  • Activity: Play centre and community hub

The Playhem Centre is a focal point for the community in Port Talbot, providing a fun place for families and groups to enjoy playtimes, parties and social events.

Playhem is part of the Thrive Group, a social enterprise, the profits from which support the valuable work of Thrive Women’s Aid, while at the same time generating local jobs. Full time work has been created for 17 local people at Playhem, and in Thrive’s commercial cleaning arm.

Both businesses have been very successful and are looking to expand. Playhem will be improving its facilities as it continues to be a hub for local people, working with youth groups, SEN groups, schools, social services and women’s groups.

"We wanted something super-duper for the kids, and we are overwhelmed by the generosity of UKSE"
Karen Todd, Business Development Manager

How we did it.

UKSE’s Community Support Programme works with local authorities and other organisations helping to underpin the fabric of communities. Working alongside the local authority, we decided to support Playhem with a donation.

Playhem is an important community hub, acting as a focus for local groups and families, and creating jobs through its umbrella organisation, Thrive Group.

As Playhem planned its re-opening after the pandemic, we donated £2500 for management to spend upgrading the facilities; as a result a new Climbing Wall is being installed for children to enjoy for years to come.

The results.

Local support
