UKSE takes to stage with latest funding initiative.
UK Steel Enterprise is set to be the star of the show, as it announces a funding boost to a Glasgow-based theatre company.
Baldy Bane Theatre Company, from Shawlands, is preparing to take centre stage with its latest production ‘For Auld Langside’, commemorating the 450th anniversary of the Battle of Langside, the most significant battle in the history of Glasgow. The theatre company has received a £1,500 donation from UKSE.
Baldy Bane Theatre Company takes issue-based plays all over Scotland, highlighting matters such as bullying, domestic violence and internet safety, working with groups such as Police Scotland, Community Safety Glasgow, NHS and Road Safety Scotland.
The show, ‘For Auld Langside’ was inspired by the evolution of the local community over the centuries. Along with the team of actors and local school children, it will start with the history of the Battle of Langside, where Mary Queen of Scots’ was forced to abdicate in favour of her infant son and was imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth 450 years ago. It will go on to look at important local issues such as the weavers’ revolt, the suffragette movement and the development of Third Lanark Football team.
The production will be performed on 12 and 13 May at Queen’s Park Arena, as part of the South Side Fringe Festival. It also forms part of the Langside 450 Commemoration, a series of events happening in the city in May, to celebrate the peace negotiated after the battle took place in 1568.
Scott Webb, regional executive at UKSE said: “While encouraging economic regeneration is a key objective of UKSE, we also have a commitment to supporting youth and community projects.
“Baldy Bane Theatre Company have a history of producing thought-provoking shows which bring awareness to important social issues within our communities.”
