Project overview.

  • Case study type: Workspace
  • Activity: Life sciences

Calibre Scientific UK provides a range of products and services in specialist areas that support research and development in the life sciences field, including drug development programmes. Demand for their services has grown rapidly and their range has recently been extended to include products for clinical testing of Covid-19 along with antibody and antigen testing kits for diagnostic use.

Starting at the Innovation Centre as a University spin-out with a team of just four, the business has not only grown but has relocated related companies into the centre as well. Calibre Scientific UK comprises four businesses, BioServUK, Molecular Dimensions, Protein Ark and Kalon Biological, three of which are based at our Innovation Centre in Sheffield.

"After moving to the Innovation Centre, what we found was an environment that supported our growth and shared our ambition to develop, by assisting us with additional space, business support and an environment focussed on our needs."
Andy Wright, Operations Manager

How we did it.

With some very specific requirements, the business needed both laboratory space and offices, flexibility and a location close to local universities. Our Innovation Centre in Sheffield fitted the bill.

Since moving in, the company has added an additional unit for operations and taken more office space with agreements that suit them, providing the flexibility they need.

They’ve also consolidated other parts of their business onto the one site.

The results.

Enabling growth

Flexible letting agreements have enabled the company to make the laboratory modifications they wanted and to grow on one site.

Fleet of foot

The company has been able to supply additional products to support the fight against Covid-19.

Employment

The business now employs over 20 people at the Innovation Centre.
